Between Poison and Remedy

Through studying the medicinal history of fungi, particularly ergot, a fungus that grows on rye and other cereal grasses, I developed a fascination with its complex role throughout history. Long associated with both toxicity and medicine, ergot has been feared for its devastating effects whilst also valued for its medicinal properties. Compounds derived from this fungus have contributed to the development of treatments for migraines and other conditions, revealing the fine line between poison and remedy.

Informed by this research and my own experience of migraine, I use glass and living mycelium to explore the relationship between fungi, medicine and healing. My practice reflects an ongoing curiosity about the hidden connections between the natural world and human experience as well as the potential of these often-overlooked organisms.
